Untreated Topaz
Untreated topaz is topaz (Al2SiO4(F,OH)2) in its natural state, with no irradiation or heating. Most blue topaz on the market is irradiated, so untreated topaz is usually colorless, often called white topaz, or in natural golden, brown and pale blue tones. With a Mohs hardness of 8 it is a bright, practical stone for jewelry.

Untreated Topaz
About untreated topaz
Colorless topaz is one of the cleanest and brightest natural gems available at modest prices, and it is often used as an accent stone or as an affordable alternative to more expensive white gems. Brazil is the main source, and topaz crystals there can grow very large and clean. Because it is untreated, the color you see is the stone's own.
Did you know?
The Braganza, a stone of about 1,680 carats from the Portuguese crown jewels, was long celebrated as a diamond and is now thought to be colorless topaz.
How to recognise topaz
Topaz is dense, about 3.5, and hard enough to resist everyday scratches. Colorless topaz has less fire than diamond or zircon but a clean, glassy brilliance, and it is heavier than colorless quartz of the same size. It has one perfect cleavage across the length of the crystal.
Caring for topaz
Because of its perfect cleavage, a sharp knock can split topaz, so choose protective settings for rings. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
Every topaz is natural and untreated, and each listing gives its weight, size and origin, with photos of the actual stone.
